    Breeding and Characteristics of New Flue-Cured Tobacco Variety Xiangyan 3

    • Xiangyan 3 is a male sterile hybrid developed with MSYZ206-9 as the maternal parent and 82-11-7 as the paternal parent. The genetic traits of Xiangyan 3 were stable. The major botanic and agronomic characteristics were excellent. The plants grew rather uniformly and strongly in the field. Its leaves were easier to be cured than that of the check (K326), especially the upper leaf. The color of its raw tobacco, with strong color intensity and rich oil, was orange. Its raw tobacco was medium and open. The economic characteristics of Xiangyan 3, such as yield, value, average price, ratio of high quality tobacco were better than those of the check (K326). Xiangyan 3 was resistant to black shank, moderately resistant to Granville wilt, M.incognita, yet moderately susceptible to TMV and PVY, susceptible to CMV. Years of field tests showed it was moderately resistant to brown spot. Its synthesized resistance was close to or better than the check (K326). It passed the Chinese tobacco variety evaluation in 2010.
